Title: A worker has been stealing from me.....
Post by: John9362 on January 21, 2014, 06:29:57 AM
Please help me out guys, a worker has been stealing from me.
Normally I would fire the guy right at the time of finding out, this time for some reason I feel confused, undecided. He actually is a great worker and I was about to give him a pay increase (without him even asking for it,) but I suppose he helped himself so perhaps he doesn't really need one. Strange I find myself in this situation, I really am split 50/50 fire him or council him??

Thanks  :( :( :(

Give him another chance, let him know the consequences if he does it again. He may learn from his lesson. If he doesn't then he's gone

No pay increase for now but if he knew his work was seen as worthy for one then he might keep up the hard work and get the extra money the right way.

You feel confused because there is another way so keep praying about it and you will know what to do

Fire them, but with the caveat that they might be able to return in a month.  Wait, see what happens.

I had the same thing happen to me, I caught two employees stealing and I fired them.  I told them they were lucky that I did not go to the authorities but I didn't because up until then they were good workers.  The particular business is seasonal and I told them I would entertain them coming back the following season.  One employee, spread rumors and talked bad about me, the other wrote a letter apologizing and when I saw them out and about they were always friendly but apologetic.  Next season you can guess who got hired back and they went on to become one of my best employees and I never worried about them stealing again.

You need to talk to them and see if they open up as to what caused them to do this, but at the same time you need to enforce consequences to their actions or you will lose the respect of your other employees.

I agree with Craig, show him the door.

You are being guided John9362.

No one can think their way into a better or worse situation. It may appear that following this line or that line leads to different results yet there is a way that seems right and leads to the opposite of what is intended.

You shall do what you shall do and that is okay.

There is only one Provider.

Hello John9362

Here is what first came to mind,Ecclesiastes 8:11-New Living Translation-

When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong

Walt.

Good find Walt. This is your answer right out of the bible.

(CLV) Because there is no sentence executed quickly against the evil deed, Therefore the heart of the sons of humanity in them is fully given to do evil."

(JPS)  Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil;

(KJV)  Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

(Rotherham) Because sentence against a wicked work is not executed speedily—on this account, the heart of the sons of men is fully set within them, to commit wickedness.

Ask him why he stole. If it was to buy his kid diapers or to put food on the table then I'd feel pretty bad for firing him... If it was so he could just have something that didn't belong to him then I wouldn't feel bad for firing him.

Didn't David take what didn't belong to him when he was on the run from Saul and hungry, so he ate the temple offering that he wasn't allowed to? And didn't Jesus use this story when confronting the Pharisees about Him and his disciples picking grain on the sabbath?

Get to the heart of the matter and make a righteous judgement.

Like a lot of scripture, I see this one as a piece of information, not as a commandment.  Certainly council him, and be prepared to fire him...but do what is in your heart to do.  You won't do an unrepentant person any good by failing to discipline him, but you may find that 'third way' and gain a brother.  You won't know until you try.

I guess I am more direct:

"John I have noticed that your work is above average.  I admire that.  Because of your hard work, I was on the verge of giving you a raise.  However, I have proof that you have been stealing form me--WHAT'S THE STORY??

Next:  What would YOU DO if you were in MY SHOES and the table was reversed?

Next:  If you think I should give you another chance--with the promise of re-paying me--HOW will your repay me--extra hours of free labor or out of your paycheck?   (I hate to lose you because you are a good steady worker BUT CAN I TRUST YOU FROM NOW ON??)

You did him a favor. You taught him not to steal.

You did him a favor. You taught him not to steal.

Only if he never steals again.
