Title: Heart - Soul - Mind - Flesh - Will
Post by: newgene87 on July 29, 2012, 01:36:46 AM
So, why am I JUST finding out about the FAQ section???! It is the greatest. (had to share that). So I read through the section of "body, soul, and spirit" and that makes sense of all that makes a person. So my question comes now; where does flesh, heart, mind, and will fall in??? I learned a great deal on heart and will reading the "free will" part B (I think) but that left me in the dark on our flesh?? Scripture says, "You shall Love the Lord your God with all your HEART, with all your SOUL, with all your MIND" (Matthew 22:37). Now ray taught me well, We consist of Body and Soul, the spirit gives life to the body and man became a living soul; so why does Jesus first say Heart, then soul, then mind: if their products of the soul?? Or are they?? And we are flesh.. "...one flesh of men" (1Co 15:39)... So we being flesh, wouldn't that make us Carnal?? Bound to carnality?? Regardless, my question is, how does the heart, mind, flesh, connect with our soul?? Why does Jesus point out the distinction of these if Soul is focul point? Well, we don't have A soul, but we are Souls' - how are we to Love God WITH all our souls?? Hope I'm not too confusing. Heart, mind, soul, flesh, body, and will seem to be my enigmas for now. Would appreciate all the input. Throw in our spirit as well. Since Paul said, "The Spirit itself bears witness with OUR spirit..." (Romans 8:16). So that too; Love you all

Man, that is one boatload of questions.   :D

I'd start by advising you to 'define' all those terms scripturally.  Then I'd advise you to resist the temptation to define them theologically.  They have real meaning, and are not religious jargon.  Then just 'live' and think about it.  It's really pretty simple in the end.

We are physical beings having a Spiritual experience in this life.  We're not bits and pieces operating independently, though we are 'divided' often between our 'will' and our 'weakness'.

Just some thoughts from Scripture that match real-life:  The 'mind' can be carnal, and the mind can be Spiritual.  The 'flesh' can be what I am by reason of creation (exactly the way He creates us for His purpose), and also what I follow or am slave to.  I think of 'the flesh' as meat--morally neutral, but prone to failure.  The heart is the deepest part of us.  It's our motivations, feelings, true Spiritual state, feigned or unfeigned before men and open before God.  It 'determines' what we do, whether that is good or evil.  The mind is what we think about, our decision-maker.  It can be 'sound', so surely it can be 'unsound' too...not much makes the mind more unsound than christian doctrine.

These things are not separate.  They 'inform' one another and influence one another--even fight one another--and altogether make us who we are...LIVING souls.  I'm one, and so are you.  The Spirit of God also informs and influences all these things about us.  Put His with ours and we are being created in HIS image, conformed to His image.

There's not a 'new' thing in any of that, I hope.  It's certainly not 'complete' from Scripture, but after the confusion passes, I hope you'll see yourself as "one".

Body plus Spirit is the Soul.

The HEART and MIND is within the SOUL.

If the Heart dictates the Mind to love, the Soul does.

The mind process what ever in the hearts.

If there is love in the HEART the MIND process it and the SOUL will act on it.
