"Don't cry over spilt milk"-why milk?why not water or any other liquid that can be spilt.

"Its raining cats and dogs"-why cats and dogs?why not elephants and rats.

"Clear as daylight"-why daylight,why not water.water is also clear.

"Straight from the horses mouth"-why the 'horse',why not a 'lion'
"Speak of the devil"-why the 'devil'

Given a a choice between 'cats and dogs' and 'elephants and rats', I think the first is more optimistic.   :D

When most people don't have a clue about the devil so how can they speak of him.

I like the term cakewalk as i I really like cake but have you ever seen a cake walk. I have walked to a number of them over my life and I'm happy to say I will continue doing so  ;D

'drunk as a skunk' I don't know a skunk with an alcohol consumption problem.  :o :D

It's funny how often I use them myself.
I started the morning off with; "Beating a dead horse"
"Dumber than a box of rocks" also comes to mind.
They can "Bite you in the Butt" before you even realize it. ;D
