Putting on the full armour of God to engage in Spiritual warfare

(1/3) > >>

Recently a missionary friend wrote in to say that she is under tremendous spiritual attack.  While the symptoms mirrored those of a severe anxiety attack, the spiritual element was evidenced by the fact that she was deeply involved in counseling a fellow believer.  How do we tell the difference?  Much is said and done in the name of spiritual warfare in Christendom.  How much of it is really biblical, how much of it can be attributed to wrong theology?

Early this year when I was quite new to BT, the same Christian friend had a vivid dream that I was in imminent physical danger.  Ofcourse she prayed for me, but I became increasingly fearful and very watchful of my every move.  While this potential danger did portend a spiritual attack, it was possibly also retribution for my husband’s ongoing crusade against corruption as a social activist.  He himself was nearly done to death a few years ago and escaped with his life through the sheer grace and mercy of God.

With the new understanding of God’s truth, how do I rise up to challenges that come my way in my daily walk.  What does it really mean to put on the armor of God and how does it affect the way we engage in spiritual warfare?

I think one thing most of us on this forum have in common is a hatred for injustice. But isn't injustice part of God's plan?

Hi Loretta,
Great question.
I think we can find biblical guidance to inform us about this.
I am hoping for some of that from other members.

For myself I would suggest that since you noted that you are new to this way of thinking.
Perhaps you should stand as an observer and not as a participant in correcting others. e.g be a good listener/observer.
God is very patient and understanding, so your option may be to view your personal place in the battle as that of one in basic training rather than as as soldier on the front lines, before your training is complete.

As Paul illustrated our task is to finish the race rather than to compete to win by running faster than others.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27
King James Version (KJV)
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Hebrews 12
King James Version (KJV)
12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

As for me, I want to "hide behind God" because I know that there isn't anything in me that's good except what He deposited. My flesh and my nature are useless. But reckoning myself dead so that Christ can operate through me, and being a temple of His Holy Spirit, that's where it's at.

Does your missionary friend proclaim the "good news" of the salvation of few and the eternal torture of many? If so, how does the blind counsel the blind? She had a dream about your imminent physical danger and you became increasingly fearful because of a dream that she had. ???  Sounds like you both may have been suffering from an acute case of the spirit of fear and an unsound mind.

Here is an excellent response from Kat from a previous thread about putting on the full armour of God.

Eph 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
v. 11  Put on the whole armor of God ("But put on the Lord JESUS CHRIST" (Rom 13:14)), that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
v. 12  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
v. 13  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
v. 14  Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth ("JESUS SAID to him, "I AM the way, THE TRUTH, and the life" (John 14:6)) having put on the breastplate of righteousness ("Jesus Christ THE RIGHTEOUS" (1John 2:1));
v. 15  and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace(The beginning of the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST, the Son of God" (Mark 1:1));
v. 16  above all, taking the shield of faith (the FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST" (Rom 3:22)) with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
v. 17  And take the helmet of salvation ("but to obtain SALVATION THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST (1Th 5:9)) and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

mercy, peace and love
