I remember in the WWCG we were often admonished to 'watch' world events closely, because there were certain prophetic events that needed to happen to bring on the great tribulation and then (after 3 1/2 yrs) the return of Christ, or something like that.
In all those verses that tells us to "watch" is it really saying to watch world events to keep ourselves up with the latest news from around the world? I've thought about that and I just don't know what good that would do, other than keep us concerned with worldly affairs. Is there going to be a great tribulation before Christ comes? I don't think so, well what are we to 'watch' for.
Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
v. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
v. 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
v. 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
v. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
v. 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful (G69) to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
G69
agrupneō - to be sleepless, that is, keep awake: - watch.
2Tim 4:5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Rev 16:15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is the one who watches (against sinning) and keeps his garments ("the righeousness of the saints" Rev 19:08), lest he walk naked (spiritually) and they see his shame (Matt 22:12).
Rev 3:18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.
Just my thoughts.
