A Most Difficult Week
hillsbororiver:
Last week I received word or should I say a command from our corporate office that with the present state of residential construction we must reduce staff here in Tampa. This is not the first or even second wave of downsizing we have had to endure but up until now none of the (eight) people that report directly to me have been affected.
This group of employees have proved to be hard working, resourceful and perhaps most importantly selfless team players, it has taken years to assemble, cultivate and refine this diverse group into a very dependable even extraordinary staff.
Through the years we have met the challenges of hurricanes, tropical storms, tight schedules/closings and some very difficult and sometimes totally unreasonable customers (the most challenging of all) and in each and every instance no matter how bleak or hopeless a given situation appeared to be we as a team were able to overcome the obstacles and more often than not exceed expectations.
We are responsible for Quality Control throughout the construction process as well as the Warranty issues that arise, we also train and enforce the safe working practices and guidelines that are critical in the prevention of injury, work stoppages, OSHA fines and even lawsuits. All of our team have bought into every aspect of our responsibilities and have been willing to learn and implement new strategies and priorities as well as working outside any "job description" when the situation called for it. I have been in the work force in many different fields and capacities for the better part of 35 years and I can say from personal experience that this type of synergy is very rare indeed.
I hope as anyone reads this they can say a silent prayer for the 3 people whose lives are about to be dramatically changed. I believe they are survivors but I hope and pray that the opportunities they find are superior to what we (my company) were able to provide for them and that the skills, communication ability and knowledge they received here translate into bigger and better things for them and their families.
I do take comfort in the fact that it truly is in God's hands and anything they go through is what they need to experience as part of their journey through His plan for them and their ultimate destiny. Unfortunately this knowledge has not translated into any peace in my struggle to meet this directive from the corporate office, it has truly been painful to say the least. I do have a little deeper understanding now in regard to "free will" and "choice" this choice of who is to stay and who has to go is my responsibility but it is a forced choice that my "free" will has absolutely no power over, I am boxed in and unable to change or even run away from this excruciatingly difficult episode in their and my life.
Please pray for us.
His Peace and Wisdom to you,
Joe

You are in my prayers Joe,as well as the families that are involved. If only I could have a boss as compassionate as you. When one door closes another is opened.Life will go on. Be encouraged Brother!

Joe,
Some how I think you are feeling the pain just as much as they will. Consider one big, huge pray on its way to our awesome God. If it is any consolation, my husband just went through a situation where he lost his job and we both found out how frightening it can be. The good news is he came through it all
and God opened a door for him into another position that is absolutely perfect for him. Please keep us all informed and I pray for you also.
Sincerely, peace
Sue Ann

Hello Joe,
Most people are not in such a position that they can understand how excruciating it is to fire good people in a down sizing. Most are the ones being let go and see it only from that side of things. I feel for you brother with the pain you are feeling right now. My prayers are with you and all that are affected by these decisions.
I once worked for a builder in the Orlando area. Faced with a similar decision to let people go, the department head decided to leave instead, thus abrogating that painful decision process to let his people go. He started his own little company to fill a niche in custom home building and took a few that were to be let go. I also hope that the three in question fair just as well. The good ones usually land on their feet and you are in a good position to sing their praises to potential new employers.
be blessed

Joe I will pray for all involved, included yourself. I echo the opinion that they are fortunate to have a boss that is compassionate and I'm sure they will know how difficult this decision has been for you.
