potatoes in hell

My how times have changed. Tell a person to “go to hell” today, and it is an insult of the highest level. Tell a person back in the dark ages of England to “go to hell” and he would probably go to a cool cellar and bring back some potatoes for dinner. For that is where they stored potatoes—in hell.

the above is from ray's writtings i showed it to someone and here is what they said:

potatoes weren't introduced to England from America until the 16th Century

should ray change it?? does it make a difference?

thoughts?

Hey Chuckt...Did your Friend reject the meat of the statement here, and focus on the vegetable? ::)

If so does the Scripture....Strain out a gnat and shallow a camel......apply here?
The point is that the word "Hell" had a different meaning in the dark ages.  Not what they did or didn't keep in the cellars!

Having said that, I don't know if Ray should change it, so those that may get distracted by it can't.  He does give a tremendous amount of detail already to avoid this very thing? ::) ???

yup  thats what i said also, and i told him to just subsitue  middle ages for dark and that it was just and example, actually he liked rays artical very much,  he was opened minded, he is one of those sticklers for detail.

no biggie, i was just wondering, i never even noticed it before.

thanks for the response!

Hi !!   ;)

When I read the remarks about "potatoes in hell", I googled :   Potatoes from America to Engand, and found this interesting article from :    http://www.history-magazine.com/potato.html .   NOW I know WHY potatoes saved the Irish people!

I enjoy learning more and more about history all over the world, and learned something today this morning!!
