Jesus is God?

Hello everyone,

  It says in the Bible that God(the Father) sent his only begotten son(Jesus) for us.  Ok. I hear a lot of people saying that Jesus is God.  I understand that the US government considers two people one when the get married.  Is this kinda what's going on here?    I understand Jesus is powerful, but to say he is the Almighty God seems blasphames to me. Any insight is greatly appriciated. Thank you!
