Christ & the Elect, a short story Zec. 10
« on: March 06, 2007, 09:28:13 PM »

Some of you might remember how at the last Conference I returned with a real fascination with the Book of Zechariah, this came about by an informal talk around Ray's kitchen table that Saturday night. We were discussing Pat Crouch (of TBN) and his use of Zechariah (5:1 - 2) to prove the TBN satellite was prophecied. Of course he did not mention the rest of the chapter as it was not very complimentary to this "flying roll" and what it represented. The following morning I woke up at 4 A.M. so I could read the entire Book of Zechariah and it was full of Eureka! moments.

In searching scripture today I came across the following in Zec 10; can you see preponderance of prophetic references to Christ and the elect and God's plan of Universal Reconciliation?

Zechariah 10

1Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

2For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.

3Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.

4Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.

5And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded.

6And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.

7And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD.

8I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.

9And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again.

10I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them.

11And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away.

12And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.

Much meat in this short chapter of a relatively small book.

His Peace and Wisdom to you,

Joe

Zechariah 10

1Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

2Ki 19:26  Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.

Job 5:25  Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

Isa 40:6  The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

Jam 5:7  Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

His Peace and Wisdom to you,

Joe

Hi Joe,

I decided to look into this "latter rain" and I began to notice something interesting.

Job 29:23  And they waited for me like the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

Pro 16:15  In the light of the king's face is life, and his favor is like a cloud of the latter rain.

Deu 11:14  I will give the rain of your land in its due season, the first and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil.

Jer 5:24  And they do not say in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, who gives both the former and the latter rain in its season; He reserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

So as water in scripture usually refers to the spirit, we can also imply that to the rain.  This 'latter rain' in 'due season' and 'the appointed weeks of the harvest,' seem to me as speaking to the latter days just before Christ returns?
Do you think the 'former rain' could be speaking of the out pouring of the spirit on the disciples/ apostles, at that appointed time, and now in the latter days the spirit is being poured out again, before the return of Christ?
Maybe I just read Christ's return into everything  ::)  But I could't help but notice that, what do you think?

Hi Kat,

Thanks for your response, I could be wrong but what I am seeing here is that the former rain is what happened at the start of the New Covenant (Pentacost) with the nurturing of the "firstfruits" and the latter rain when the firstfruits become the clouds with Jesus at His return who rain the the latter rain of His Spirit on the rest of humanity in judgement.

Mat 24:30  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

1Th 4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

So what I am seeing is the former rain is still happening in His chosen and the latter rain is after His return. Like I said I could be off here and appreciate any and all comments.

His Peace and Wisdom to you,

Joe

Zechariah 10

4Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.

Psa 118:22  The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Isa 28:16  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Ezr 9:8  And now for a little space grace hath been showed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

Isa 22:23  And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.

Hello again Kat,

There can be no mistake that Zec. 10:4 speaks of Christ in no uncertain terms.

Hie Peace and Wisdom to you,

Hi Joe,

I can see what you are saying, that certainly is Christ in Zech 10:4.

And I can see that the former rain is the New Covenant and it is the nurturing of the "firstfruits."
It is this scripture in James that makes me wonder about this latter rain.

James 5:7  Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

So it sounds like Christ will not return until he receives the latter rain too.  But this latter rain is also the spring rain.

Joe 2:23  Be glad then, sons of Zion, and rejoice in Jehovah your God. For He has given you the former rain (Strong's  H4175 môreh; teacher or teaching; also the early rain) according to righteousness, and He will cause the rain to come down for you, the former rain and the latter rain (Strong's H4456- malqôsh; the spring rain; figuratively eloquence: - latter rain.) in the first month.

So I trying to think how this all fits together.  Could this rain be the Holy Spirit, so it is poured out on the elect now from Christ's resurrection until His return?   And it could also be looked at as the cloud that the elect return in?   1Th 4:17 "...together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air..."

I'm just now trying to consider all this, so I know I may be off on this  :)

Hello again Kat,

I like that verse you quoted here, consider how it reads "for the precious fruit of the earth" this doesn't seem to differentiate firstfruits but seems to include the entire harvest, the early and the latter. I think it may imply or point to the culmination of all things because that is what Christ's ultimate mission is to bring all men to God the Father.

This patience is, was and will be an attribute of His elect as well, especially after the resurrection when they are incorruptable, Our patience is actually His patience, being nurtured and developed in this life, perfect in the next.

This is a study not a teaching so if there are any other thoughts anyone may have they are surely welcome.

His Peace and Wisdom to you,

Joe
